Full Text
A Fable.—Two travellers stopped together at a seedy inn, and being hungry, ordered a dinner of poached eggs. Being called to the table after much delay, they found that a part of the eggs served up for them, were rotten. One of the travellers made some attempts about it, and called in the landlord and made quite a fuss about the poached eggs. "Now," says Boniface, "you need not rear and pitch about it. You have put me to extra trouble to get poached eggs for dinner, and must not cut up about it, because one or two of them happened to be damaged. You find no fault with the balance of the eggs. I shall charge you extra for your dinner, anyhow. You must eat your dinner, gentleman, sir: and then if you want to disgorge it, there is nothing easier. Waiter, bring a I believe emetic for the gentleman.—There, sir. I make no extra charge for the emetic. Now swallow your poached eggs, stranger!"
Application.—We are urged to swallow the Constitution, exemption article, bank article, woman article, boundary article and all, because it has been cooked for us; and because we are provided with the means hereafter of getting rid of it.
