THE MAIL ROBBER.

The Richmond Enquirer contains the following further particulars respecting the detection of the Post Master at Newbern, Montgomery county, Virginia.

An agent was sent with particular instructions to detect the pilferer, and the scheme has eventuated in the apprehension of the postmaster at Newbern, Montgomery county. We understand that on the 25th ultimo a letter was put into the post office by the agent at Abingdon, addressed to a person in this city, containing 20 dollars in small North Carolina notes. The agent employed a countryman to call at the post office at Newbern, to ask for a letter, and there being none for him, to inquire of the post master if he could give him small North Carolina notes for two fives, as he found it difficult to change them on the road. The postmaster, Wolhford, readily gave 10 dollars in the very notes he had stolen from the agent's letter. As soon as the agent received these, he called at the office and demanded of Wolhford the other 10 dollars. He denied having them. The agent then demanded the keys belonging to the office, which were immediately delivered. On instituting a search the other 10 dollars were found when Wolhford confessed his guilt. He was lodged in the gaol at Montgomery court house on the evening of the 29th.

It seems that nearly every double letter in Wolhford's office had been broken open; and that he had a good deal of money in notes of various banks in his possession.
