Log Drivers Meet Death by the Capsizing of a Boat at Rhinelander.
Rhinelander, Wis., June 23—[Special.]—George Bronke and Edward Johnson, employed as log-drivers by Daily & O'Day of Merrill, were drowned this afternoon near the city bridge while breaking a jam. The men, in company with several others, were in a boat, which was struck by a log and capsized. Bronke and Johnson were good swimmers, and started for shore with the rest, but Bronke was struck in the head by a log and went down, and Johnson met his death while trying to save him. Both were single men. They have worked on the river for years and were accounted experts by their comrades. Bronke was about 38 years old and Johnson 25. The former lived at Tomahawk and the latter at Merrill. Efforts were made to resuscitate the unfortunates, but they were futile, as the men were in the water thirty minutes.
