A SONG.
Addressed to Miss E. D.
I
ET other Bards, in lofty Strains
And Lines poetick sing
The fragrant Beauties of the plains,
When chear'd by jocund Spring ;
While I, in humbler Lays, will tell
'The Beauties of my Toast ;
How far my Betsy does excel
All Charms the Plains can boast.
The blushing Rose, and Lily join'd,
Are portraits in her Face,
And Modesty, by Sense refin'd,
Enlivens ev'ry Grace.
Her Form is such as Nuns might raise
From Earth the Hermit's Eye,
Force from his Mouth her boundless Praise,
And from his Heart a Sigh.
But, though with greatest Beauty crown'd,
With Innocence she's blest ;
Though Passions in her Heart are found,
By Reason they're supprest.
Although with ev'ry Beauty bright,
To her they're latent still,
And, like the Basilisk, her Sight
Is ever sure to kill.
Oa. 3, 1764.
