Dieppe, July 10.
The Protestants are in a great Consternation, on Account of Nine Lettres de Cachet having been sent here to take away Nine young Damels, Daughters of good Merchants and Tradesmen of this Town; five have already been taken, viz. two Miss Grovets, Miss Griel, Miss Jevelan, and Miss Cappe. Lettres de Cachet have likewise been sent to Rouen, Baulbec, &c. Where this will end God Almighty knows. When they have thus taken the Children of Protestants, they oblige the Parents to pay such a yearly Sum to the Convent or Monastery into which they are put, as the Prosecutors think fit, and this they call paying for the Children's Board: Whatever is required must be paid; and the Sum required seldom fails of being an extraordinary one.
Not any one. It is to be observed, that they always take the Children who are reputed rich; so that it looks much as if those Ecclesiastics had rather an Eye to the Parents Money, than the Salvation of the Children.
