Mary's Real Little Lamb.

Mary, who "had a little lamb," was a Massachusetts girl, and her particular lamb was one of twins, thrust out of the pen by its unnatural mother. Mary took it home, and it became a family pet. One day it could nowhere be found, but as Mary went singing on her way to school it heard her voice and followed her.

At the school she hid it in her desk, till she was called to spelling class, when the lamb sprang out and pattered after her, to the general amusement of scholars and teacher. A few days later young Rowlston, son of a Boston riding master, produced three verses of the well known poem. How it came to be published no one knows, for he died soon afterward, ignorant of the popularity of his lines. The lamb grew to maturity and came to its death by the horns of an angry cow.
