ITS YOUR HEALTH!

Prepared by the Staff of the
HEALTH SCIENCES DIVISION
UNIVERSITY
OF WASHINGTON
HEALTH EDUCATION

Health education
is overcoming
some of the problems of mankind.

Fewer children
die and more of
mankind lives to fulfill their years.

There is less blindness and deafness
due to complications of communica-
ble diseases. These and many other
health hazards are being overcome
by
reason of widespread knowledge
concerning the causes and their pre-
vention.

The public health nurse has ac-
complished a great deal in this pro-
blem of health education. The nurse
is ever alert to an opportunity
to
help the young mother. She teaches
the mother about bathing the baby,
about the sanitizing of the baby's
clothing and the baby's bottles. She
helps the mother to overcome
the
fear of doing
the wrong thing and
the fear that the baby isn't doing
well.

The nurse keeps
the mother re-
minded of the preventive measures
available to control the communica-
ble diseases.

The public
health
nurses of this state
are frequently
finding families
that have missed
entirely having their children immu-
nized.

This state has a good record in the
control of the communicable diseas-
es, one time so fatal to so many ba-
bies.

Not unless there is constant
vigilance, and a very high percent-
age of immune children, is each
community safe from further out-
breaks of these disease conditions.

The public health nurse has be-
come well aware of the health ha-
zards of malnutrition. There is still
rickets in spite of the ready means
for prevention
of this condition.

Parents will fail to provide the cod liver oil, or other form of vitamin
D to prevent this deforming condi-
tion.

As the many communicable di-
seases are brought under control the
way is cleared to recognize many o-
ther health hazards of man. There
is a large job in health education
necesssary to bring the problems of
control of cancer, heart disease, dia-
betes, high blood pressure and obes-
ity to a high level of general know-
ledge.

The public health personnel has a
major service to perform here. Tea-
chers at the secondary school level
have a responsibility for spreading
knowledge which will help prevent
the chronic diseases and diseases of
old age.

Good health knowledge is
a major preventive for poor health
practices.
