Full Text

Future of G. Cleveland Et Al.
From the Kansas City Times.

Pending the assembling of congress, Washington correspondents must do something to justify drawing their salaries, so, in default of anything of more substantial interest, they confide to the public what Mr. Cleveland and the members of the cabinet are going to do after March 4 next. Should Justice Field fail to retire in time, so that the secretary of the treasury may be appointed to a place on the supreme bench, Mr. Carlisle will resume the practice of law, but whether his shingle will be flung to the breeze in New York or Covington, the veracious correspondents omit to state. It is given out with certainty that the distinguished assistant republican and ardent gold bug, who once declared the demonetization of silver to be the greatest political crime of this or any other age, will not go into co-partnership in the legal profession with Cleveland and Olney, as has been occasionally predicted. Mr. Olney will return to Boston and resume the practice of his profession. A person with his inventive faculties, as was manifested in his discovery of the limitless amplitude of the writ of injunction, and of the interpretation of the old Ku Klux and anti-constitutional statute, by which the federal government is empowered to send troops into a state, without the request of its chief executive officer, and before time has been had to invoke the powers of the state for the suppression of disorder-is calculated to put money in his purse if he embarks in the patent business, in the event the law fails to yield him the revenue his needs and wishes require.
