AN EPIDEMIC BREAKS OUT IN DYER COUNTY.
Sixty-One Cases Diagnosed and Thirty-Five Deaths—People Panic Stricken and District Quarantined.
Dyersburg, Tenn., Jan. 2.—Sixty-one cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis have developed to date in Dyer county and of this number 35 have died, according to a statement made to the Associated Press tonight by Dr. J. A. Albright, formerly secretary of the Tennessee board of health, who has been engaged by the county authorities to direct efforts to stamp out the disease. Twenty-one of the cases and 11 deaths occurred within the town of Dyersburg.
Within the past 24 hours two cases developed in Dyersburg and two cases in other parts of the county.
Dr. Albright stated that immunizing agents are being freely used and within a few days he anticipates that his forces will have the situation well in hand and a marked improvement be shown. Public gatherings have been discontinued.
Quarantines have been established by adjoining counties.
