Girls, do you want to combine romance with business! Do you want a job that is mentally stimulating and offers you professional prestige? Then be sure to read my advice to Emma today. Cupid often has a tooth ache so meet him at the dentist's.
CASE D-365: Emma G., aged 18, wants some vocational advice.
"Dr. Crane, my mother thinks I ought to study nursing." she began, "but it seems to me that after the war there will be a surplus of nurses.
"Under normal conditions, there is usually a long waiting list of nurses in the cities who wish calls to private duty.
"I think I would like nursing but if the field is crowded, where else could I fit into the medical picture?"
DENTAL OPPORTUNITIES
If Emma wishes to work in a nursing capacity and yet enter an uncrowded field, I should recommend that she become a dental assistant.
Dentistry is one of the rapidly developing fields of medicine. It isn't overcrowded.
The hours are usually in the daytime and the working conditions are very pleasant for the girls employed therein.
Furthermore, the romantic opportunities are of the best. In fact, they are so good that dentists often complain because they can't keep an attractive assistant very long.
Some of their young male patients fall in love and marry the charming assistants.
One of my dental friends in Akron, Ohio, has lost three girls in a couple of years just because of Cupid.
A JOB WITH A CUPID
When a girl is looking for a position, she should survey all of the possibilities.
Dentistry probably surpasses medicine in this regard, for the medical nurse is dealing with sick or dying males who aren't so likely to be young eligibles.
Besides, her duties often confine her to a home or hospital and away from the general public. Her hours may be at night when most people are asleep.
And when a nurse does get a day off, it may not be on the conventional Saturday or Sunday when other people are vacationing, but may fall on Wednesday when romantic opportunities are more restricted.
I have the utmost admiration for nurses. And I think they are a choice group of girls from which to select wives.
But a dental assistant combines nursing with romance. She deals with men who are young and healthy, instead of senile invalids.
DENTAL ASSISTANTS
A good dental assistant also has a varied type of work. She deals with all ages. And with women, as well as men. She must be an attractive efficient girl, with deftness in laboratory techniques.
But she should also have a pleasant telephone voice and be very diplomatic.
She serves as bookkeeper and receptionist, as well as artistic supervisor of the office arrangement and equipment.
She has an unexcelled opportunity to become a talented applied psychologist. She can put into daily practice the "Compliment Club" and the other psychological experiments which are outlined in this column from week to week.
If you girls want a position that challenges your intelligence, but has unlimited psychological and romantic possibilities, then become a dental assistant.
Or else become the office nurse and receptionist for a physician in private practice.
Since romance is a vital part of a girl's life, she should try to find employment wherein her chances of meeting eligible males are not too limited.
