Full Text

I HAVE observed an advertisement in the Potomac Guardian of the 19th instant, inducing the public to believe I have uttered a number of lies concerning Jane Dunlap: if Mr. Dunlap can make this good, I would thank him to show wherein I have erred from the truth, otherwise let him be the liar and not me; if Mrs. Dunlap denies her entering on said premises with the men, and burnt my fence, I appeal to her neighbours that were eye witnesses; as for any other of her actions in his absence, I know nothing about them, but Mrs. Dunlap never opposed me until my fence was 3 or 4 rails high all round, with a number of rails hauled to it. Mrs. Dunlap does not deny her burning my rails, but says she was maintaining his right—let him prove his right, and I will give him his just claim, as he cannot have a just claim without a right: but Mrs. Dunlap has acted arbitrarily before now; about 3 years ago, Barnard Cole got 2 or 3 of his neighbours to help him erect a fence round a piece of the same tract of land, Mrs. Dunlap came with 2 more and run over Cole's ground work, but thinking they should lose the ground, one returned to the house for the horses and slide, and Mr. Dunlap came with them and hauled their grain-field fence out, and keeps the ground to this day. There was no mutual line between them at that time. and I defy Mr. Dunlap to prove a line between him and me, except my fence, or one of his own making which I never agreed to. What I have said above, I hope will satisfy the minds of the public, to wait till Mr. Dunlap has proved the authority of his advertisement, before they consider me a liar. I am with respect, the public's most obedient, &c.

AARON FARDIN.
