Saturday, June 3, 1797.
From reports through different channels, there appears a probability that we are on the eve of an Indian war. A large body of Indians from the different tribes North-West of the Ohio, as well as from the Southward, are said to be collected in the Spanish territory opposite the Illinois, where the Spaniards have assisted them in erecting a very large council-house. The reason said to be given by the Spaniards for the encouragement given by them to the Indians to settle in the territory of Spain, is, to enable them to repel an invasion apprehended from Canada.
An express from the commandant at Fort Massac, to Gen. Wilkinson, passed through this place on Thursday last—by him we learn, that, from the late conduct of the Indians, that post is thought to be in considerable danger.
