Vindication for Chief Hawkins—Cases Before the Mayor—A Little Excitement in the Opera House.
At the afternoon session of the Levy Court yesterday the following constables were appointed in addition to those already reported:
White Clay Creek—Peter B. Legates.
Pencader—William Willson.
New Castle—James Toner and Israel H. Fols.
Red Lion—George N. Bright.
St. Georges—James Gray and Alfred Stevens.
Appoquinimink—Granville Reed.
Blackbird—Thomas Deakyne, Jr.
Bridge-tenders were appointed as follows:
Eleventh street—Zebediah Blizzard.
Third street—William Bareford.
Market street—William Forsyth
Newport bridge—Jno. Hutton.
Odessa bridge—Joseph Fairbanks.
Fepuimore bridge, Appoquinimink hundred—John H. Hutchinson.
Fleming's Landing—William H. Hudson.
At the conclusion of the appointments Col. Febiger moved for a number of transfers in the Sixth ward, Wilmington. Several transfers in and additions to the Fifth and Tenth wards were also made.
Mr. Sharpless presented a letter from William M. Fields of Riddle's Bank asking the Levy Court to appoint a resident constable at that place and naming Jacob Sheu, a carpenter, for that position. Action was deferred on the communication until a number of other vacancies were to be made.
C. Mahaffy, the committee appointed to audit the accounts of William F. Lane, Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Poor of New Castle county, reported that they had found the following account correct: Balance on hand at last settlement, $1,562.65; received from county treasurer, $34,526.82; draft on the Philadelphia National Bank for $20,000 to pay for the Almshouse farm; proceeds of temporary loan, $9,869.43; board of inmates, $1,774.40; from G. L. Jemison, unexpended balance, $445; from New Castle County Insurance Company, dividend, $16.80, making the total received, $68,205.11. Expenditures as per vouchers from No. 2,888 to 2,980, $64,762.03, leaving a balance now on hand of $3,443.06.
Court then adjourned until 10 o'clock Tuesday morning
Peter Springer and George C. Ward, appointed constables for Wilmington hundred, are to succeed David C. Wilson and William B. Hickman, whose terms had expired.
