The democracy of Alabama covered themselves with glory in the late political victory. To no man in the state is the result more due than to the Hon. John Forsyth, the able and brilliant editor of that staunch and noble old journal, the Mobile Register.
Mr. Forsyth has toiled for years, in and out of season, through poverty, sickness and abuse, for the right, for the true principle of sound democracy, the rights of the south, and the good of the country. He is a vigorous writer, a polished gentleman, thoroughly conversant with the politics of the country and the wants of the people. His familiarity with the temper and spirit of our modern statesmanship would make him a valuable and honored member of the United States Senate.
The people of Alabama owe it to themselves to reward so faithful a servant, so courageous a defender. It is high time the senate should be reinforced by the culture, intelligence and gentlemanhood of the country. It has been infested by corrupt mediocrity and political upstarts long enough. Mr. Forsyth has fairly won the honor of having his claims considered favorably, and we desire to see this gifted and chivalrous ornament to journalism rewarded as his merits deserve.
