qualities which Shakespeare, in the Merchant of Venice, makes Shylock describe in those famous and eternal words. "Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?"
Such treatment is not only hurtful to the victims of it but it is a reflection upon the culture and breeding of those who accord it. The spirit prompting this sort of treatment is the cause which permits such a statement as the following,
"wrecking companies, that have installed short wave radio sets, have annoyed the police in making calls to automobile accidents. They have usually reached the scene of the accident often before the police. The police calls hereafter will say, 'go to a certain corner and you'll find a Negro there'. "
This sort of thing isn't fair for obvious reasons. One effect is to make every Negro a suspect.
