Sunbury American

Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania

What is this article about?

The New York Tribune's editorial incorrectly states that Presbyterians are becoming Congregationalists following the Presbyterian Synod of Missouri's refusal to join the pro-slavery secession from the New School Church. New School Presbyterians are actually separating from Congregationalists on Home Missions, with a potential conflict in the American Board over Presbyterian missionaries forming presbyteries.

Not Exactly.—The New York Tribune has an editorial in which it states, (apropos of the Presbyterian Synod of Missouri refusing to join the recent pro-slavery secession from the New School Church,) that the Presbyterians are rapidly becoming Congregationalists! The Tribune never made a more awful mistake in its eventful life: the New School Presbyterians are becoming less Congregational every day; they are separating from the Congregationalists in the matter of Home Missions, and there will probably be a battle in the American Board very soon, because the Congregational managers of the Board refuse to allow the Presbyterian missionaries in foreign lands to form Presbyteries. For further particulars see the American Presbyterian or the New York Evangelist passim.
