STENOGRAPHER TAKES OWN LIFE

GIRL SWALLOWS LAUDANUM WHEN MOTHER DECIDES TO MARRY THIRD TIME.

OBJECTS TO STEPFATHER NO. 2

Young Woman Worked Hard Eight Years to Support Herself and Parent and Does Not Want An Other Man to Share Home.

Pittsburgh, Pa.—Because she could not persuade her mother to give up her plans to wed a third time, Caroline Long, a pretty stenographer, swallowed laudanum and died later.

The attractive 20-year-old girl had typed letters for the Howard Construction Co. eight years to maintain herself and mother and when she learned recently that the latter intended to bring a second stepfather to the home she had kept up she declared she never would welcome him.

Police Hear Arguing.

About midnight neighbors heard the girl, her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Shrader and John Berwin arguing. Then the girl screamed hysterically and fearing from the indications that serious trouble would follow someone called the police. Officers found the mother and the man discussing the daughter's opposition to the wedding.

Being unable to calm the man the police told them they must be quiet or they would be arrested. The daughter in negligee then appeared and, according to the police, asked if she had changed her mind. Receiving a reply in the negative the girl drew a revolver from the fold of her gown and pointed it at her temple. It was knocked from her hand.

Drinks Deadly Potion.

The police ordered the girl to dress, but before complying she turned to the mother and asked if she intended to marry again.

"Don't be foolish," the mother replied, "John will make you a good father."

As the girl turned toward a closet as if to reach her garments she said: "Well, remember what I told you."

Instead of taking down her clothing she reached to a shelf, secured a bottle and raised it to her lips. The policemen again sought to save her, but fighting them off she managed to drain its contents.
