INTERNAL IMPROVEMENT.

Previous to the adjournment of the General Court, an act was passed appropriating five thousand dollars for the purpose of surveying the site of a canal to connect the waters of the Hudson river with Boston harbor. Although we entertain the same opinion relative to the plan which we expressed in our paper of the 9th ultimo, yet we are gratified at the passage of this law, because it manifests an awakened zeal for the promotion of the best interests of the State, and affords an indication of more liberal views, relative to the development of our internal resources, than have heretofore prevailed, and because we believe that if the route from Connecticut river to Boston should prove tolerably feasible, the carrying into effect of that part of the plan would be of great and lasting utility. A survey will moreover determine very nearly the probable expense of extending the canal through the whole length of the proposed route, and afford more certain data than we now possess, from which to judge of the probable advantages to be derived from it; and we shall be very happy to find that our conjectures relative to the western section have been erroneous.

We have seen in the papers two or three pieces relative to our article above alluded to, in which the writers dissented from the opinions there expressed, which we should deem it our duty to notice if they had contained any fact or argument to overthrow the positions we had taken, but as they do not, we have no room to spare for the purpose of mere speculation, the more especially as the most important facts from which to draw a rational conclusion will be so soon ascertained.
