Eye Strain Brings
Need Of Glasses
To Modern Women
By HELEN JAMESON
From King
Features Syndicate,
inc. 235 E. 45th Street, NYC
Eyes smart and burn. The printed
page is spotty or dim. You know
what's the matter all right.
You
need specs, but vanity urges you
to postpone the fateful day. When
it is a matter of looks we're all
"poor weak women" and ought to
be ashamed of ourselves. Glasses
aren't a symbol of age any more
now that so many of the young
fry are wearing them. Why not ac-
cept them?
Try to get along without them
you'll be sorry someday. If you
feel so tired you can't drag one foot
after the other, it may be your
eyes. If you are depressed, don't
care whether school keeps or not, it
may be your eyes. The physical
mechanism is wonderfully put to-
gether. One cog out of order and
everything goes haywire.
The act of vision is performed
by the brain. The eyeball is a
camera, a sensitive piece of ma-
chinery that receives and trans-
mits impressions to the higher
centers of sight. When conditions
are not normal the sympathetic
nervous system puts up a protest.
One feels snarly and cross. It is
possible that because of nerve
strain, nutrition may not go on in
a normal manner.
Why have one's world upset
when care of the eyes and glasses
to relieve them from strain will
make everything right again?
The victim of impaired eyesight
can take her choice, refrain from
putting on specs and accept
the whole miserable trail of beauty
griefs that tags along—red-
rimmed lids, frown and squint lines,
tears, headache—or cultivate a
serene state of mind and con-
sult an eye specialist.
Few eyes are perfect. For those
who have lessened powers the lens
of the glasses supply accommoda-
tion. Desk workers use up more
energy than those workers whose
jobs keep them outdoors when the
range of vision is constantly
changing. Typists have their eyes
under a state of tension by the
clattering keys of the typewriter.
After the age of forty every in-
dividual should have an eye ex-
amination.
Persistent headaches are
often
a warning that something is
wrong, although of course there
are many other causes for this
dreadful affliction. The blinking
habit may be due to an irritation
of the lids or a demonstration put
on by nerves that are upset by
strain suffered by the eye lan-
terns.
Squinting, unless one is sub-
jected to strong sunlight, is nearly
always evidence of impaired
vision. The eyelids endeavor to
shade the eyes and so provide a
degree of ease and comfort. What
squinting does to the surrounding
tissues everybody knows. Laughing
wrinkles they are called. A good
joke. No woman ever got a laugh
out of her own.
Drowsiness when reading may be
a sign that eyes are played out
and what help. If you have
to
hold a book closer than normal,
eleven inches to your face, you
need glasses. A word to the wise
ought to be plenty.
