Full Text

On Tuesday last, the Freemen of the State assembled in their respective Towns, for the purpose of giving in the votes for Representatives to the 8th Congress, and for members of assembly. The meetings were generally thin, and we regret that many of our Republican Friends neglected to exercise their privileges. Let them remember while they sleep, their enemies will be active. In some towns where the Republican interest has had 200 votes majority, there were but 30 this election, owing entirely to the non-attendance of the Republicans. Notwithstanding the remissness the Republican Candidates Gen. Stanton and Nehemiah Knight, Esq. will appear to have been elected by about 1000 majority.

The number of Republican members of the assembly will be greater in the next assembly than the last.

The votes in Providence stood Federal 282. Republican 81. Here too we find many of our Republican Friends were remiss in their duty.

Providence Phenix.

NEWPORT, Sept. 4, 1802.

On Tuesday last, the Citizens of this town assembled at the State house for the purpose of bestowing their suffrages. It was to the true friends of their country a day replete with anxiety.—He who witnessed them, can alone conceive the deep and lively emotions, by which each and every honest hearted Republican was actuated. All personal animosities laid aside, they were absorbed by, and united in the one great common interest; and hand in hand "like a band of brethren joined" they pressed on in solid columns to vindicate the faithful, and to sanction the principles of their fathers.

Such undaunted firmness; such intrepid adherence to conscientious conviction; such brilliant manifestations of magnanimity, and patriotism, have seldom transpired. Though but small previous exertions had been made by the Republicans, still at the moment of trial, they, with very few exceptions, were found firm and united, steady, inflexible, and acquitted themselves to the interest, and glory of their country.

The following Gentlemen, (Republicans) were re-elected Deputies to the General Assembly without opposition,

Viz.

CONSTANT TABER,

JOHN GARDINER,

NATHANIEL HAZARD,

THOMAS G. PITMAN,

JOSEPH BOSS. Jun. and

PAUL M. MUMFORD.

Accounts from different parts of the State inspire the most hopeful sentiments. Though the Town meetings in some of our towns have been rather disorderly, owing to a preponderance of federalism, still they are to be considered but as topical distempers, which a pure air will gradually remove.

STANTON and KNIGHT composed the Republican; and TILLINGHAST and PORTER the Federal ticket for members of Congress.—We have no doubt the Republican ticket will succeed by more than a thousand majority.

The following is a statement of the majorities in the several towns from which we have heard.

By the best information we can obtain from different parts of the state, it appears there will be considerable acquisition to the Republican interest in the next General Assembly.
