Newport, Rhode Island, April 26.

On Wednesday arrived at Bristol, Capt. Simon Potter, in a Privateer of this Place. We hear that he and his Consort Capt. Gruchy of Boston, about a Fortnight ago, met with two French Ships on this side Bermudas, and after a smart Engagement took one of them of 400 Tons, 18 Guns and 80 Men, loaded with Sugar, Indigo, &c. After securing the Prisoners, Capt. Potter left the Prize in Custody of Capt. Gruchy, and pursuing the other Ship, came up with and engaged her again; but Night coming on, and some hard Squalls of Wind, she escaped, and he lost Sight of Capt. Gruchy.
