The citizens of the western section of Grant county, West Va., are trying to secure a tannery company to take over the Hoffman tanning plant at Gormania and operate it. The plant at Gormania is owned by the Flaccus interests whose plant at Buckhannon was destroyed by fire some time ago.
R. N. Oates, David Cuppett, Sr., and Paul Leatherman were in Pittsburgh a short time ago conferring with officials of the Flaccus company.
Recently a citizens' meeting was held at Gormania, presided over by Bob Oates, the object being to get the sentiment of the people and see what cooperation they would give toward the movement.
A. F. Schwartz, an old tannery man, spoke on what was needed for the operation of a tannery—labor, bark, pure water, etc., all of which Gormania has to offer. The men at the meeting offered to donate labor from a few days to two weeks helping to get the plant started. About two hundred were present, some of them experienced tannery men.
Chairman Oates then carried the result of the meeting to the officials at Pittsburgh. A petition has already been circulated in Grant county, West Va., and nearby sections urging the company to locate at Gormania.
