Letter from our Correspondent.
Washington, Dec 29 1830 -The prominent topic of the day here, is the recent denouncement of the umbrage between the President and Vice President "Gadsby's you know, is one of the grand centres where members of Congress and office-seekers,-gentlemen loungers and politicians of all sects and parties, black, white and grey, congregate every morning and evening to discuss the affairs of State, and to show off their Coffee House Rhetoric:--some are standing in groups in front of the house-others in the lounging room, and not a few encircle the fire-and, as I said before. Mr. Calhoun awkward predicament is the prevailing topic. Some say that he will throw off the mask and come out, or his partisans will come out for him very shortly, and throw off all allegiance to the Jackson cause "He is certainly losing ground every day with that party, and it is said, is very much depressed on the position in which he placed. Van Buren is an object of the most bitter invective among Mr. C's partisans: they do not scruple to say that he has been playing a deep game of duplicity with them and they now have the mortification to find that such is the case when it is too late. No doubt he has acted a double part at their expense Van. on the other hand, is generally regarded as a party intriguer, who is ready to sacrifice every body and every thing to secure his own self aggrandizement. This, you have long been aware of and the whole Calhoun section of the Jackson party are now convinced of it too. as well as the Vice President is fast losing ground. In the mean time. the general current of opinion is setting in favor of Clay. and it is the better opinion that nothing can withstand his progress to the Presidency. I was informed yesterday, by one who has great opportunity to know, that the Senate will soon show the face of opposition to the General They begin to feel that their councils have been treated with too much disregard if not contempt My word for it, a majority of them are at the moment prepared to resist further encroachments, and that you will soon see But you shall have more on the aspect of parties in a few days
