Suit Is Filed and Decree Restoring Her Maiden Name Is Granted Same Day.
Cedar Rapids, Ia.-Turning a deaf ear to the pleading of her husband, Dr. Harry Elgin Webster, to give him moral encouragement and financial support in an effort to clear himself of the charge of murder, Zoe Varney Webster filed a petition for divorce in the Linn county district court. The divorce was granted, restoring her maiden name.
Oregon, Il.-When Dr. Harry E. Webster signed a document which permitted his second wife, Mrs. Zoe Varney Webster, to secure a divorce at once, he greatly injured his own defense, as the action means that the woman will go on the stand at her husband's trial and testify against him.
The signing of the document caused a clash between Attorney F. C. Beyers, for the father of Mrs. Webster, and Attorney Francis J. Callahan, counsel for the physician. Callahan seized the paper and would have torn it to pieces but for the interference of Sheriff Delaney.
Three witnesses have identified Webster as the man who went to Dixon on the night of September 15. The physician had said he was in Chicago at the time his wife was slain.
