Full Text

An Obdurate Heart.-When sentence of death
was pronounced upon John H. Phelps, at Albany,
N. Y., on Monday last, for the murder of his wife,
the criminal took his seat without exhibiting the
least emotion of fear, agitation, tremor, or symptom
of uneasiness. Turning to his step-son, a lad
of some fifteen years, who sat beside him, wrapped
in tears, he reprimanded the boy for allowing his
feelings thus to gush out. He then held his head
erect, without the moving of a muscle, the shedding
of a tear or even heaving a sigh. A human being,
possessing a more callous, obdurate heart, is scarcely ever brought to justice to satisfy the law.
