THAT CANTEEN.

Roach, found in an oyster saloon, said he went in to get his coffee warmed up.

As he said that he planked his flask on the table.

"Let me see it," said the Commissioner. "Some of these canteens have something else than coffee—" (smelling it). "This may have had coffee last," said the Commissioner, returning the flask. "How long in there?"

"One minute."

"Roundsman, what do you know about this habit of Roach's?"

"I don't know. I passed the place and the door was closed, and went to the end of his post. When I came back I saw him come out. He said he was in getting his coffee. I asked if there was any trouble, he said no. The baker said he came in to settle a disturbance."

"Coffee is very good to settle a disturbed stomach," remarked the Commissioner.

"I just went in and poured it in the bowl, drank it and came out," said Roach.
