The inconsistency of the Boston junto, in refusing at one moment to applaud the valor of our tars, and the next moment voting thanks to the hero of lake Erie, is very pertinently exposed in the N. York Evening Post. There is another inconsistency, however, of which the Evening Post is as guilty as the Boston junto, an explanation of which we shall be glad to receive from either. At the same time that they claim all the honor of having been the uniform friends of a navy, and declare the recent triumphs the evidences of the necessity of an increase of ships, they call on the good people of this union to oppose the collection and payment of taxes. It will be in vain to quarrel for the honor of being the sole friends of a navy, it will be ridiculous to call for its increase, if the means of increasing it are withheld; those who wish for a naval force cannot procure it by magic, money must be had, and in what better way can money be had, than in that resorted to by the federalists themselves? Unless, therefore, those who raised taxes in 1799, to build ships, are now prepared to say that it was unwise and wicked to do so, they ought to use every exertion to reconcile the people to pay the taxes now laid, the more especially as without those taxes the increase of the navy cannot be effected.
