Selected Poem.
FORGET ME NOT.
When far away
Thy footsteps stray
Mid scenes in other lands,
Where strangers meet,
Indifferent greet,
And coldly press thy hand
Oh! waft to me,
Far o'er the sea
The dearest thought—I think of thee
The sweetest thought
Thou'rt not forgot,
While back shall float, "Forget me not."
Though years may glide
Adown the tide,
Old Time his ways pursue—
Though parted yet,
Do not forget
The dear old friends, and true.
Life still may cheer,
Though sometimes drear,
And rays of sunshine gild the tear;
Whate'er thy lot,
Time ne'er shall blot
Thee from my heart—forget me not.
In morning hours,
When brightest flowers
With sweetness gently sigh;
When twilights throw
A purple glow
On wood and lake and sky:
When moonlight beams
And starlight gleams
Fly back to me in sweetest dreams—
Back to each grot
And cherished spot,
That silent breath, "Forget me not."
