Shut out of a number of other Dixie tournaments, particularly in the Louisiana-Florida area, Negro golfer Charlie Sifford one of the nation's top money winners will tee off in the Greater Greensboro Open Golf tournament. April 13-16 and become the first of his race to compete in a PGA co-sponsored tournament south of the Mason-Dixon Line
The hard-driving Sifford got the green lights from the Greensboro tournament recently, after the board of directors passed a resolution declaring that neither creed, color nor race would be the basis for rejecting an applicant play in the Open

While Sifford will be the first Negro to play in the GGO, breaking race barriers in golf is not new to him. He cracked the ice in a number of other tournaments leading up to this one. During a winter tour of the west coast, he also was one of the nation's most successful golfers, finishing consistently in the money. He won the San Diego Open back in 1957.
Sifford acceptance for the GGO was confirmed by Mose Kiser Jr., general tournament chairman, who said: "We received an official entry blank from Sifford and he is an approved PGA tournament player."
Actually, the tournament was extending a courtesy to Sifford as a fellow Carolinian.
A native of Charlotte, Sifford started his career there at the age of 10 as a caddie.
Sifford is a five time national Negro champion, winning in 1953, 54 '55, 56 and '60.
