The Presbyterian synod of South Carolina in session at Greenville, has been engaged several days in the discussion of the Darwinian theory of evolution.
The issue arose from the fact that Dr. Woodrow, one of the professors of the Columbia theological seminary, with the avowed purpose of fortifying the young members in scientific knowledge, had set forth the theory of evolution in his lectures, expressing his own belief in it, and declaring it not inconsistent with scriptural teachings. The discussion of Dr. Woodrow's position was warm and spirited. most of the leading divines of the synod participating in the settlement of the question, which was reached last evening by the adoption of the following resolution:
Resolved, That in the judgment of this synod the teachings of evolution in the theological seminary at Columbia, except in a purely expository manner, with no intention of inculcating the truth, is hereby disapproved.
The vote by which the resolution was carried, was yeas 50, nays 45
