Full Text
During the late severe weather, we have witnessed among us, much active benevolence. Our Fuel Society has received contributions to the amount of one hundred and twenty five dollars—nearly forty families have been relieved, and fifteen cords of wood distributed. The Society have funds and wood, sufficient to meet all the demands upon its charity. Our Dorcas Society has with its usual promptness and liberality, caused many a heart to rejoice, by a generous distribution of the "garments of charity." In the personal exertions of many individuals, we have also seen many acts of benevolence that do honor to human nature and doubt not, but their hearts have known the "luxury of doing good"—and felt that "it is more blessed to give than to receive."
We feel a pride in presenting the name of Lemuel H. Arnold as a candidate for Governor of this State. He is a gentleman in every respect qualified to elevate the office of Chief Magistrate of this State: a man most emphatically without reproach, and without an enemy.
Mr. Arnold has unquestionably made a great sacrifice of personal feeling, in accepting this nomination. He has done it solely for the sake of the principles involved in the question; and it is matter of rejoicing that we have a citizen so worthy and so disinterested.
