The city of Hudson, in Mr. Van Buren's own county, sends greeting to all good whigs in the Union: "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."
"After a heated and closely contested election for city officers, the whigs are triumphant! and we have elected Cyrus Curtiss Mayor of the city, by a majority of 80 votes. Last year, Col. Darling, the Locofoco candidate, was elected over his whig competitor, by a majority of 25 votes. Whig gain 105."
"We are almost surprised at the result ourselves; but, when it is recollected that the contest was narrowed down to Henry Clay, or Martin Van Buren, & protective tariff or a revenue tariff, which is nothing more or less than free trade in disguise, all wonder ceases."
"The Whigs have also secured a majority of the common council. Thus we go."
"In Schenectady the Locofocos ran no ticket for mayor, but made fight for members of the common council, and were signally beaten."
In Rensselaer county, the town elections resulted largely in favor of the Whigs, just turning since last year.
From Westchester county, we hear that in towns heard from, all Loco last year, Whig supervisors had been elected in three, viz: Westchester, Greensburg, and North Castle, and at White Plains the Locofocos only succeeded by 7 majority.
At Waterford also the Whigs have carried the town. Last year Locofoco majority 43."
