FORNIER'S BODY FOUND FLOATING IN THE CHANNEL

(Juneau Empire)

The body of Ed Fornier, who has been missing since about 3:30 o'clock last Wednesday morning, was found floating in the waters of the channel at 8 o'clock this morning.

The body was first discovered by a workman employed at the Union Machine shop when he went on shift this morning and was almost in the door of the shop under the platform there.

It will be remembered that Mr. Fornier closed up the Arctic pool room where he had been employed for a number of years at about one o'clock Wednesday morning. He drew five dollars from the register and the last seen of him was about 3 a.m. the same morning when he was on the wharves in the vicinity of the city dock.

The place where the body was discovered is about two hundred feet north of where the man was last seen As there was a very heavy south wind blowing last night with a fair sized swell the supposition is that the body became dislodged from its resting place at the bottom of the channel and drifted to where it was found.

There was a large bruise in the middle of the man's forehead and he was bleeding very freely from the nose and mouth when found. His watch, a valuable gold one, was stopped at 7 o'clock. As far as is known nothing was missing from the pockets of the dead man.

A coroner's jury that was impaneled were present when an examination of the body was made by Dr. I. O. Sloane. There did not seem to be any indications of foul play, the bruise on the forehead being only superficial and could have been caused by bumping against a pile.

The closest friends of the dead man know but little of his past life It is only known that something over a half dozen years ago he was employed in Fairbanks. He has worked as a clerk for Dave Housel at the Arctic pool room almost continuously since coming here from the interior Whether he has any relatives alive or where they live is not known, for it is said that he never received any mail As far as is known he was never married. He was about forty years of age.
