The Democratic Party has recently been charged with being favorable to the re-opening of the slave trade.
This is the most ridiculous humbug of the day, and shows that the opposition are hard run for something to write and talk about. The democratic party is and always has been opposed to the re-opening of the Slave Trade and the opposition leaders are as well aware of this fact as we are. A few southern fire eaters who are as destitute of patriotism and common sense as the abolitionists of Maine and Vermont, are the only advocates of the re-opening of the slave traffic.
The democratic party, as we have already said, is opposed to it.
Another humbug resorted to by the opposition is the Tariff. They pretend that they are the friends of a protective Tariff and that the democratic party is opposed to it. Now how are the facts? The Tariff of 1846 was passed by Democratic votes- It was repealed by a Black Republican Congress, and the low tariff now in existence, which has proved so injurious to the manufacturing interests of the country, enacted. Nathaniel P. Banks one of the leaders of the Black Republican party was one of the firmest advocates of the present low tariff. David Wilmot the opposition leader in this state went so far while in Congress, as to recommend the abolition of duties on import, and a resort to direct taxation for the purpose of raising revenue for the support of the government. Our opposition friends should "get up" a couple of new humbugs forthwith; the old ones won't take with the people.

The article debunks opposition claims that the Democratic Party favors reopening the slave trade, attributing advocacy to a few southern extremists, and asserts the party's opposition. It also refutes accusations on the tariff, noting the 1846 tariff was passed by Democrats and repealed by Republicans, with leaders like Banks and Wilmot supporting low tariffs or direct taxation.
