At the Circuit Court of the United States for this district, which has this week been held in this city, Chief Justice Marshall and Judge Potter presiding - Thomas Haswell, late assistant Postmaster at Lewesburg, in Franklin county, was convicted of purloining letters and money from the Mail of the United States; but at the request of the prisoner's Counsel, and by consent of the Counsel for the U. S. the Court postponed its next term, to be held on the 1st of January next, passing judgment on the offender until that time; in the mean time, Haswell is to remain in confinement.
The case of Mr. Haswell ought to prove an affecting warning, to young men placed as he was, in the way of money temptations. Two months ago, his character stood as fair as that of any young man in the state. No warrant ever issued against him. His reputation for honesty and integrity. This appeared in evidence, not only from Mr. Joel King, in whose service he had been for several years, and with whom, for the last two years he was a partner in business, but from several other respectable witnesses: yet, in an evil hour, he was tempted to commit an act, which has blasted his reputation forever!
