Full Text
The Treasurer of the Evansville Benevolent Association has received, through the Journal office, from some unknown hand-prompted by a benevolent heart-the sum of five dollars to be expended for the poor. Each winter for several years past, a similar donation has come through the same channel, or a like purpose. It is from the country, and is given to the city poor. We wish some of our citizens whose obligations are more immediate to their own neighbors, could be stimulated by this example, to discharge a high social and moral duty, and reap its sweet rewards. We doubt if any money ever expended brings to its possessor half the solid happiness, which this annual donation secures to the giver. In the privacy of his own reflections he draws more real happiness from it, than many rich men derive from all the displays of their wealth, in splendid residences-rich equipages and costly living.
