Among the various Letters we have received from Belleisle, we have received the following Anecdote of Lord Pulteney, who was marching with his Company to the general Attack of Fort Palais, but being greatly galled by a Battery which took his Men in Flank, turned about and told them to follow him, for they must take that Place before they proceeded, otherwise they should all be cut off; accordingly he led them on; and they took the Place Sword in Hand.
Another mentions, that M. St. Croix having put Col. Crauford, and the rest of the English Prisoners, in that Part of Fort Palais where the English were going to make their general Attack, sent General Hodgson Word of it, and that he had no other Place of Safety to put them in; the English General remonstrated against such an unprecedented Act, and after several Messages between them came to this Determination, that for every Englishman which should be killed in the Fort, if he succeeded, he would immediately hang up three Frenchmen.
Another likewise informs us that in the Sally the French made upon their Troops, M. St. Croix could not get his Men to march out till he had made them three Parts drunk.
It is said the French are so alarmed at Port L'Orient and all along the Coasts of France, being left almost without Troops, that several of the principal Inhabitants have absolutely moved their most valuable Effects. And it is further said, that they have addressed the Most Christian King, to recall some of his Forces to guard their Coasts, in the strongest Terms.
