Full Text

About five miles distant from Bombay, in the East-Indies, is a small island which contains one of the most inexplicable antiquities in the world. At the foot of a hill, near the landing place, you see the figure of an elephant of a natural size, cut coarsely in stone. An easy slope then leads you to the portal of a magnificent temple, hewn out of the solid rock. It is an oblong, eighty feet long, and forty broad. The roof, which is ten feet high, is cut flat, and supported by regular rows of pillars, with capitals resembling a round cushion as if pressed by the incumbent mountain. At the farther end are three gigantic statues, which were mutilated by the Portuguese, when this island was in their possession. It now belongs to the English, and is called Elephanta.
