FOR THE ARGUS:
THE FAREWELL.
Now Autumn pours her chilling breeze,
And strews the yellow leaves around.
Now on the faded forest trees
The pigeons wild in flocks are found—
November brings the season cold;
And Summer's verdant charms are o'er.
M now is twelve years old;
And she will go to school no more.
No more the unkind, unthinking boys,
With taunts ungenerous, low and rude—
Shall vex and mar her infant joys;
Or on her simple sports intrude.
Cease partial parents to complain,
To ask "who's head" you may give o'er,
She will no longer give you pain:
For now she goes to school no more.
Already she has proven it true
That genius still gains envy's frown
Instead of praise, to merit due,
Detraction is incurred alone.
But ah! what griefs await her years!
The smiling morn of life is o'er.
What sorrows in this vale of tears!
For now she goes to school no more.
But let unkind reflections cease,
Let only tender thoughts here dwell—
Let love, let harmony increase;
And hear M's last farewell.
"Farewell school-master! and likewise
My school mates all! our plays are o'er
No more I'll join your clam'rous joys;
For now I go to school no more."
