The claims of more than twice as many candidates for the Presidential nomination will be submitted to the Baltimore Convention as to the Chicago Convention. Six of the Northern Democratic Governors have been entered for the contest. Last week Connecticut appeared with another favorite son by instructing its delegates for Gov. Baldwin. North Dakota's ten votes were already pledged to Gov. Burke, and Indiana's thirty to Gov. Marshall. Most of the Massachusetts delegates at-large are pledged to Gov. Foss, although his name did not figure in the preference column at the primaries. Judson Harmon will not receive a final answer from Ohio until May 21. So far he can lay claim to only a half dozen scattering delegates.
In the lead of all others are Speaker Clark, Gov. Woodrow Wilson and Representative Underwood, but none holds a commanding position. Mayor Gaynor and Mr. Bryan are also to be considered as possible candidates for the nomination.
Less than half the delegates to the Baltimore Convention have yet been chosen, and of these that are elected over 20 per cent. are unattached to any candidate. Under the two-thirds rule it is altogether unlikely that when the National Convention meets next month any one of the ten Democrats mentioned will be in a position to feel sure of the nomination. It is a free-for-all race that will be decided only at the last hour, and the rank and file of the Democracy seem to be singularly indifferent to the outcome in view of the prospects of party victory in November if a strong candidate is nominated.
