SINGULAR THEFT.

A late Hull (English) paper says, that a young man named Rowntree, twenty-one years of age, was found stealing a leg of pork and a piece of beef from a butcher's in Cottingham, near Beverly. From Rowntree's wealth and respectibility, it was almost doubted, that he was sane when he committed the act. This circumstance induced suspicion, and a general search warrant was granted, and Mr. Rowntree taken into custody. On looking over the premises, there were found sheets, shirts, table linen, shifts, baby clothes, knives and forks, tools, saucepans, china, tea, and indeed, every imaginable article, either of use or consumption, even of the most trifling value, which were claimed as the property of his neighbors, and had been stolen over a space of three years. The prisoner was taken before the magistrates of Beverly, and was remanded, many of those owning the goods refusing to prosecute.
