Guarded by One Tender

SOUTHINGTON, Conn., Jan. 23.
—Accidents can't very well happen
on the crossings guarded by Peter
Curtin, veteran crossing tender!
Peter guards gates in Southington
and Plantsville, all in the same
day. It's done this way:
When a train reaches a crossing
guarded by Curtin, it stops while
he operates the gate. Then it
conveys him to the next crossing,
stops again until the gates are
operated and then proceeds. Traveling
back and forth from one crossing
to another is Curtin's chief
occupation.
