Putnam barbers voted a twenty percent increase in the price of shaves and haircuts to offset the rising cost of supplies, it was announced Monday evening following a meeting held Monday evening at Armand Montville's Barber Shop, Pomfret Street. Effective March 16, shaves and haircuts will be 25c and 50c respectively, instead of the prevailing 20c and 40c rates.
Representatives of all Putnam shops attended the meeting, at which organization of the Putnam Master Barbers' Association was completed, and officers were elected as follows: President, George Lizotte; secretary, Joseph Landry; recording secretary Eugene Benoit.
The association was formed with the approval of the State Barbers Commission, represented at the meeting by Commissioner Joseph DePaola, State Barber Examiner, who explained current rules and regulations.
Officers of the association explained that the increase for shaves and haircuts was necessitated by the rising costs of supplies, the higher wages that must be paid and the increased cost of living. Supplies in some instances have jumped almost 100 percent, spokesmen said. In addition to the increased costs, which average forty percent, there must be added the ten percent Federal tax.
No change in the price of shampoos, massages, etc., were announced.
