A special swim program for retarded youngsters is conducted in conjunction with their other activities, and is held at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Teen-agers can arrange for instruction in stroke improvement at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday.
The swimming teams, one for children 10 and under and the other for youngsters from 11 through 16, will be competing this summer in the Central Connecticut Swimming League.
Team practices are held Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., noon and 1:00 p.m., and 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Meets coming up for the team of 10-year-olds and under will include those with Glastonbury on July 24 in a 6:00 p.m. meet at Glastonbury, and on August 3, in a 5:00 p.m. meet against Berlin at home.
The older swimming team has the following meets: July 16, 5:00 p.m., Windsor; July 23, 5:00 p.m. at Meriden; July 27, 5:00 p.m., Berlin; and July 30, 5:00 p.m. Glastonbury.
Both teams will take part in league trials to be held August 1 at 11:00 a.m. in Meriden, followed by the championships, also slated for Meriden on August 5 at 11:00 a.m.
In addition to these league meets, Hayes Kruger, director of swimming activities for Newington, has said that on August 10 his top junior and senior swimmers will journey to South Salem, New York, for a meet, and on July 27, a group of competitive swimmers from Brewster, New York, will be in Newington for a noon-time meet.
Mr. Kruger also said this week that the annual Lions Club meet for all children of the community has been tentatively set for August 18. He noted that this will include all swimming and diving events, and will be for children of all ages.
One phase of this annual event will be for members of the Swimming Team, while a second will be for those youngsters who are non-team members. For Swimming Team members, this Lions Club event will serve as the qualifying competition for the annual Tournament of Champions held each year at Goodwin Park in Hartford.
