From the Salem Gazette.

TO THE HUMANE INHABITANTS OF SALEM,

Who with equal liberality and benevolence, contributed upwards of 157 dollars for the relief of the late Captain Reuben Gardner, who, together with the survivors of his crew was taken from the wreck of the British brig Daphne, and brought into that hospitable port; where, notwithstanding every possible attention, he fell a victim to the hardships he had endured.

British Consulate, Boston, Oct. 19.

Gentlemen—Although those who, like yourselves, are solely actuated by motives of humanity, delight to
'Do good by stealth, and blush to find it fame,'
you must pardon me for thus publicly thanking you, in the name of my country, for the munificent and compassionate relief recently conferred by you on my late unfortunate fellow subject, captain Reuben Gardner, and extended since his decease to his afflicted widow; for the publicity of such exemplary benevolence, must prove both morally and politically beneficial. It must tend to elevate our general ideas of human excellence, and to cherish and strengthen those friendly propensities, which are now so happily reciprocated by our respective countries.

I have taken measures to carry into immediate effect your kind intention with respect to Mrs. Gardner, who must derive the most salutary consolation from the assurance that her husband's sufferings received every alleviation which friendship and commiseration could bestow, and that the last moments of his existence were cheered by the voice of sympathising benevolence.

I have the honor to be, gentlemen, with the highest respect and esteem, your most obedient humble servant.

GEORGE MANNERS.
His Britannic Majesty's Consul in the state of Massachusetts.
