A Sanctimonious Loafer, and how he robbed his fellow boarder, and how he tried to come the double shuffle over "the Indefatigable"—A few days since, a Mr. Halsey applied to the magistrate for the assistance of an officer, to ferret out an audacious robbery, which had been committed at a boarding and lodging house, at No. 76 Nassau street. The magistrate put the affair into the hands of that indefatigable officer, Robert M. Bowyer, who immediately went to the house in Nassau street, and found that suspicions had fallen on an Englishman, whose name did not transpire, and a sanctimonious Yankee loafer named Joseph B. Cornelius. "The indefatigable" made several bootless visits to the boarding house, but could not arrive at any definite conclusion. Each time he saw the Yankee loafer, the latter would insinuate some fresh suspicions against the Englishman, and express his anxiety for the matter to be set at rest. At last Bowyer began to suspect his Yankee friend, and on Monday he determined to take him into custody, when lo! it turned out that this sanctimonious loafer had committed the robbery himself, and that he had sold the valuables taken from Mr. Halsey's trunk, to Brock of Chatham street. On proof of this fact, he was brought up for examination, and the stolen property having been identified, he was fully committed. In his possession, when arrested, was found a handsome blue cloak and other property, which now remains in the hands of the Police Magistrates.
