BRILLIANT TENOR NOW TOURING SOUTH
Sang Male Lead In 'Aida' 1938 Negro Opera Presentation
Word was received this week from George Matthews by the National Negro Opera Association that immediately following the termination of his southern concert tour he will return to Detroit to take the male lead in the opera "La Traviata," which will be presented by the local company to Detroit audiences very soon.
Mr. Matthews was starred in the leading role of the opera "Aida" presented under the direction of Stewart Piggins last May. Referring to his ability as a singer one southern daily writes:
"George Matthews, noted Negro tenor, was presented in recital in the auditorium of Reid high school by the music department of that school but the music department was not the only beneficiary. for those who attended the recital were also rewarded by hearing some magnificent singing."
Stewart Piggins, director of the National Negro Opera Association expressed pleasure over the large turnout for auditions last week and Miss Dorothy Steger, well known as a singer and a teacher of voice, is considering the offer to become one of the instructors in the music classes which have been instituted by association members of the cast and the chorus.
Auditions for "La Traviata." it has been announced, will continue throughout the month of April.
