Florence April 5. The Ceremonies of the Holy Week totally employed the Great Duke and Duchess for many Days; each performed them exactly in the same Manner as they are performed by the Emperor and Empress at Vienna. On Thursday, each in separate Apartments, washed the Feet of twelve old Men and Women in public. after having served them a Dinner : They were all new clothed; besides which, each of them received a Piece of Money in a Purse, which the Great Duke and Duchess put about their Necks, and were allowed to carry away the Dishes, Plates, Linen, and every Thing they had made Use of at Dinner on this Occasion In the Afternoon both the Great Duke and Duchess, but in separate Processions, and each attended by all the Officers and Ladies of the Court, a foot, and followed by a Detachment of the Garde Noble on Horseback, visited seven Churches, as is the Custom, and on Easter Day went together in State to the Cathedral Church : They afterwards dined in public ; and there was a Drawing-Room at Court in the Evening.
