KEEPING PROMISES.

There is an unaccountable looseness among men generally in the matter of promise-making. It does not, therefore, surprise us greatly to find that there is equal looseness in promise keeping. Under the influence of social exhilaration, or business pressure, many are led to promise that which they have no care, and in many cases no intention or ability to perform.

There seems to be as little sincerity with some people, and as much sheer form, in promising, as in the matter of introducing friends. It is not strange, therefore, that in the one case they are confronted with claims which they do not acknowledge; and that in the other they are accosted by newly-made friends whom they do not recognize. A Christian and consistent regard for truthfulness, would make every man as cautious of his promissory words in the ordinary exchanges of social life, as of his promissory notes in business transactions.
