How Gentlemen of Elegant Leisure Live In the Sweet Summer Time
Interesting Information Imparted by a Member of the Tramps and Beggars Association
Wheeling people are no doubt unaware of the existence of an organization in this city that has on its list of membership the gentlemen of elegant leisure but absence of cash who hang up here for the winter and take the road in the summer. This organization does exist however and is known as the Tramps and Beggars Association. It is a branch of the National Association of Tramps and the members will leave for a summer tour some time the latter part of this month or the first of May.
"Do you ever receive communications from other like associations?" asked a reporter of a member the other day.
"I should say we do. We get letters from associations in other cities all over the country giving us pointers on good routes to take and on what roads the best walking is to be found. They also keep us informed on what streets the best houses are to be found and which ones yield up the most grub."
GIVING OUTSIDERS POINTERS
"Do you give them the same information in regard to Wheeling?" asked the reporter.
"Yes we always do that when asked but this year we have given all the members of the craft pointers to fight shy of Wheeling the coming summer if they can possibly do so. So far I have seen no signs of any of the brotherhood in this neighborhood but no doubt they will be around shortly. This weather is regular all wool yard wide walking weather and it will witness the migration of thousands of members of the Tramps Association from different cities."
"Do the members of the craft have any sign or pass word by which they can recognize fellow members?"
"Yes we have a certain peculiar chalk mark which is placed along on fences and buildings to show the road has been traveled. Then there is another mark to put on houses along the country roads which tells us plainly whether there is any use striking the inmates for something to eat. There is also another to place on barns which shows whether or not the barn is a good place to sleep in and by the addition of a little tail to the mark it tells us there is a bull dog about and to look out for him."
GOT BADLY LEFT
"Well," queried the reporter, "do you never get left on any of these signs?"
"Oh yes sometimes. I remember on one occasion I was left quite badly and I still have marks to prove it. The thing occurred over in Ohio you may be sure it wouldn't have taken place in any other State. I was going along a country road leading to Toledo but was yet some seven or eight miles out of town and it was getting late into the night. I was so tired I could hardly walk and hadn't run across any favorable signs for a night's rest for several hours. I had almost determined to hang up on the ground when I espied a barn and as a last resort determined to investigate its hospitality. I was playing in great luck. I actually found the favorable sign on the barn and lit a match to see if the little tail that meant bull dogs was attached. It was not there at least I did not see it and the next morning when I awoke and started out of the barn with a ferocious pup attached to the seat of my pants by his teeth I did not care a darn. I knew the dog was there. The man who put the mark on the barn evidently hadn't been introduced to the dog. I was. But mistakes will sometimes occur."
TO LIVE LIKE A DANDY
"Do you fellows live pretty well when you are on the road?"
"Well I should say. I intend taking a valet along with me this summer and live like a dandy. I have been elected President of the Society and the position demands this luxury. The valet's duties consist in going ahead to ascertain if there are any dogs to be encountered working the breakfast and supper racket. I always get the dinner. That is my best meal and I can't afford to trust to other hands the securing of it. It must be something extra and of course demands an artistic manipulation of the modus operandi to secure. There are many points and finished touches to the business that it requires years and years to attain and But excuse me there comes the Treasurer of our Association and I want to see how much money he has secured to start off with. Oh know we always make a little splurge at the starting time. Good day."
